You Need To Apply To 500 Jobs To Land A Role

"You need to apply to 500 jobs to land a role."

I've seen this advice floating around, especially lately. And I get where it comes from. The market is tough. People are anxious. It feels productive to keep firing off applications.

But here's the thing. In over two decades of engineering, I've never broken 100 applications between roles. Not once.

What made the difference wasn't volume. It was targeting.

Instead of applying everywhere, I focused on:

  • Roles that actually matched my experience
  • Companies where I understood the problem they were solving
  • Positions where I could articulate why I was a good fit, not just that I wanted the job

Spray and pray feels like progress, but it often leads to burnout, rejection fatigue, and a resume that tries to be everything to everyone.

Quality beats quantity. A thoughtful application where you've done your homework plus intentional networking will outperform 50 generic ones. Even in today's market.

If you're in the middle of a search and feeling like you need to hit some magic number, slow down. Be strategic. Your next role might come from application 12, not application 312.
