Optimized Survival Mindset
The shift from being a senior engineer at a large organization to building inside a startup is an interesting one.
At large companies, you think in longer time horizons. You focus on optimization, add proper caching, set up robust monitoring, and make plans for horizontal scaling. You are solving tomorrow’s challenges and preparing the system for the weight of future users.
At a startup, the mindset is completely different. It is about survival and learning as quickly as possible. You ship features fast to see if anyone even wants what you are building. You solve today’s challenges because your next paycheck may depend on it.
I started my career with the startup mindset and gradually evolved into the optimization mindset as I moved through larger companies. Then I stepped back into startup land and had to remember my roots. Only this time, experience gave me a more balanced perspective.
Now I operate in a blend of both modes. I solve the problems in front of me with the urgency they deserve, while keeping an eye on the future so the foundation is ready for what comes next.
How do you balance the urgency of today with the scalability of tomorrow in your own work?
