Age Discrimination Is Real And It S Not New
Age discrimination is real and it's not new. That "over-experienced" candidate you pass on could be a force multiplier.
When I was in my 20s, I asked a colleague how an interview went. They said the candidate knew her stuff but they would pass because "she could be your grandma." I thought, "What's wrong with that? I love my grandma," but stayed silent.
Looking back, that candidate could have been a mentor, a model of resilience, and an example of how to be a better software engineer.
I'm sure she found a team that valued her, but I missed out.
Hiring leaders: passing on experience can look like saving money, but it often means losing momentum, judgment, and mentorship.
Hire for impact, not age.
What is one way your team taps senior talent as a force multiplier?
