Six years ago today. My first weeks as an SRE at American Express.

I joined in Oct 2019 and signed up for Give2Gether / Serve2Gether at Feeding South Florida. A huge group of us spent the day sorting donated food into bins that would become care packages for families. It was simple work that mattered. It also felt familiar to an SRE. Queues, flow, quality checks, and small actions at scale.

I met so many good people during my time there. Mohammad Abuhaija, Geetha Chittuluri, Peter Venables, Dean Landis II, Dong Lang, Tyler Zymkosky, Sarvenaz Myslicki, Austin Sasko, Matthew Plachter, Jim Ramirez, and many more. Grateful for you.

My big takeaway is that reliability is about people first. Service days build trust, teach flow, and remind us why we build systems in the first place.

If your company offers volunteer days, take them. If you lead a team, organize one.
